World’s largest data center to be built in Arctic Circle

September 15, 2017

A small town in the remote north of the Arctic Circle is set to be home to the world's largest data center. The Kolos facility is being developed by a US-Norwegian partnership, also called Kolos, who say the site will eventually draw on a record-setting 1000 megawatts of power.

The World's Largest Sustainable Data Center

August 22, 2017

Norwegian data company Kolos is building the largest data center in the world powered by 100 percent sustainable energy. The massive 6.46 million-square-foot facility, which will serve the global data market, will be completed in many years and stages. The center will run on renewable energy in the forms of wind and hydroelectricity powered by Fjords that surround the facility on three sides. Norway’s cold climate and low humidity levels will also help offset energy demands.

World's largest 'fortress for data' that is fully powered by hydropower and wind is being built in the Arctic

August 18, 2017

The world's largest 'fortress for data' is being built in the Arctic, and it will be powered by 100 per cent sustainable energy.

Located in the northern fringes of Norway, Kolos will be the largest green data centre in the world - relying entirely on hydropower and wind.

The cool, stable climate of northern Norway and the site's proximity to water will provide natural cooling for the centre's vast servers.

Arctic Data Center Designed to Break Records for Size and Efficiency

August 16, 2017

There, in the small city of Ballangen, Kolos co-CEO Mark Robinson told eWEEK that the company plans to build the 600,000 square meter (about 6.5 million square feet) facility on land formerly occupied by an airport. The land is on Norway’s west coast in an area of fjords and rugged mountains. The four-story facility will supply a gigawatt of power for computing with an estimated PUE (power usage effectiveness) of 1.04.

Kolos hopes to build a gigantic data center in the Arctic Circle

August 15, 2017

Norway may become home to the world’s largest data center, as an ambitious plan has been put forward by a company to build a massive facility in the Arctic Circle.

US-Norwegian company Kolos has obtained part of the necessary funding for the project, which would see the construction of a 600,000 sq m (6.46m sq ft) data center in the city of Ballangen in Nordland county, 225km (140 miles) into the northernmost region of the world.

Kolos is now in talks with US investment fund Headwaters MB to secure the remaining costs for the facility.

Record-sized data centre planned inside Arctic Circle

August 15, 2017

This was one of the early interviews with the BBC for the launch of Kolos, the worlds first Hyper-scale Data Centre. Funny side story about this interview. I was supposed to give it in London but was stuck in the Bergen Airport due to bad weather. By chance, the reporter who was going to interview me was stuck in the same airport and we had it there. We both then flew to London where I enjoyed a day off at my favorite pub with friends before returning back to Norway for more interviews.
